Paneled Den TV Mounting in Costa Mesa

TV Mounting Square Costa Mesa covers TV mounting on wood-paneled walls in Costa Mesa dens, family rooms and bonus rooms — thin paneling on top of studs or drywall, with the paneling treated as trim and the bolts landing in the wood behind it.

Paneling is trim, not structure

Thin wood or veneer paneling was a staple of 1960s and 1970s dens. It is nailed or glued over studs or over drywall, and it is far too thin to hold a mount. The plate is bolted through it, and the bolts are made long enough to cross the paneling and the drywall behind it and still reach the stud.

Finding the studs through the grooves

Vertical grooves in the paneling often follow the nails below them, and a stud finder reads through thin boards with mixed success. The installer checks with a probe hole made in a groove, where a plug or a dab of matching filler hides it, and measures from a known stud outward.

Paneling over Sign Fixing
Studs directly Hollow sound between grooves Bolt through the board into the stud
Drywall on studs Solid sound, nails along the grooves Bolt through board and drywall into the stud

Keeping the finish

A mount can be placed so the plate covers old grooves and trim, and a raceway can be stained or painted to disappear against the grain. If the owner plans to remove the paneling later, the plate is placed where the new wall will take it.

Paneled Den TV Mounting — common questions

Does paneling make a TV mount harder?

A little. The bolts are longer and the studs are found by probe, but the work is routine.

Can the cords go behind paneling?

Hiding wires inside a wall is a separate job that uses an in-wall rated kit. A stained raceway is the simpler choice on paneling.
